Shimano EP8 ebike motor, a step forward compared to the steps e8000

The Shimano EP8 is an evolution of the STEPS 8000, more compact and weighing 2.6kg (300g less than its predecessor), this reduced weight and its 85nm force make it a very good option, adding to the equation that it has a contained volume helping brands to make good integrations compared to their competitors.

Its display in appearance is the same as that of its predecessor, but there are important changes in terms of connectivity and customization functions and choice of modes, the 1.6-inch screen size offers very good brightness and data reading, we I especially like the easy-to-read color code to tell which mode is selected.

We miss more detailed autonomy information and it would be a point to improve, instead of the 20% intervals offered by the 5 lines of the current system.

A positive point is its very cornered position between the handlebars and the stem, which means that despite being an exposed screen, it is quite safe to fall without breaks.

The control is very ergonomic and is perfectly integrated between the grip and the brake lever, its pulsation is very intuitive and helps to focus on driving, a fact to keep in mind is that you can do without the button and change the modes on the own computer, but if we do this we won't be able to use the WALK ASSIST mode.

Regarding autonomy, we have Shimano batteries available up to 630wh, some brands are beginning to release batteries of more than 700wh for the EP8 system, a point to take into account in order to compete with other manufacturers that opt ​​for higher capacities.

We can extend this autonomy thanks to the customization of the assistance modes with the E-TUBE PROJECT application. We will be able to adjust the torque, acceleration and power of our motor, the modes that we will be able to adjust are ECO, TRAIL and BOOST in profile 1 and 2.

 Special mention to the ease of installation and use of the mobile application, which added to the graphic interface make this a perfect entry for those uninitiated in ebikes, who can easily change the motor parameters without fear by adjusting the assistance to your needs.

 In general terms, the EP8 engine is a step forward compared to its predecessor in its weight/power ratio, in addition the volume improvement in its front part is notable, on the other hand this ep8 is quieter when it is running but on descents it has a quite annoying noise when we are not pedaling.

Its connectivity has not inherited the problems of the e8000.

The ep8 is shimano's commitment to mtb motors, we believe the direction is correct, its predecessor was a very good motor in terms of performance and reliability, we hope that this new ep8 is up to the mistreatment it received will be submitted by the riders.
